Why start a blog?

Why start a blog indeed!
[edit] What I've tried
I've tried a number of blogging systems out there and I continue to be unimpressed with them. Mediawiki (the software that runs Wikipedia) has some pretty good wiki software which is not entirely 'blog' like, but I think for me it is what will do the trick. Primarily my dissatisfaction with blogs is their 'journal-likness'. The very impermanence of articles which fade away into the history of time makes the effort in preparing them seem wasted. A wiki, on the other hand, preserves articles indefinitely, allows them to be indexed, categorized, and improved over time.
[edit] Omar
Omar also kept bugging me to make a blog. He figures it is a great way to keep in touch as then people can use their RSS readers to keep track of things in your life without you having to hound them all the time. In theory this sounds true, unfortunately most people who might want to keep up with what's new in my life do not know how to use an RSS reader :<
[edit] Thought streams
Ultimately it was a book I read once which suggested that the best way to organize your thoughts is to present them to someone else. Thus you, the virtual audience of this site, will serve as the guinea pigs to organize my thoughts. By exposing the thoughts to you, it will force an added discipline and degree of organization which I might not otherwise have bothered with.
[edit] The downside
Speaking of feedback, that is one of the problems with using the wiki as a blog. I need a Mediawiki extension which will allow me to have a 'comments' section at the bottom of articles like a real blog does. Sigh. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too. On the other hand, most blogs sites are totally cluttered with all the 'social networking' goodies which tend to give me the creeps :> I do plan to add a link to feedback form, but of course I can't just dump my email address in here or I'll get even more swamped with spam!
